Photoshop Prelim Task.

For our second prelim task, we had to design and create a Magazine cover and contents page for a school magazine. We were asked to choose a name for our magazine, choose stories to feature i our magazine and were given complete creative fredom.
Before photoshopping could begin, we had to design and draw out a mock-up for our cover. From this, I learnt that if planned beforehand, an idea can be manipulated and changed if needed and also that the editing part of the process would b quicker also.
Mock-up and camera in hand, in pairs we had to do our cover shoots. I chose to venture outside and swing from a rugby post in hope that I would get my shot. Afterwards, I uploaded my images to the computer and began the editing process.
From my images, the name "Rebel" came to mind so it became my 'masthead', I took the pepet tool and swatched the purple from my jumper for the colour. I also reduced the visability of it to 85%.
Using photoshop, I first used the 'Clone Stamp Tool' on the face to give the skin a cleaner appearance, then used the 'Dodge Tool' to highlight areas such as the teeth.
With the 'Polygonal Lassoo Tool', I cut around my head to give an illusion of my head being infront of the title.
Continuiny with this tool, I created a duplicate layer, cut around my legs and the grass, then reduced the saturation to contrast the top of the image. >

Then I added the surrounding 'cover lines' and 'lures', using personal pronouns such as "Your" to adress the reader directly. I also tried to use a variety of fonts and colours. I used a rhetorical question to also adress the reader and then added a barcode and price in the bottom left corner.
On the contents page, I created a blank file and cut around another image and saturated it, ajusted the curves etc. After adding another title, I moved the image to appear as if hanging from it. Using the 'Burn Tool' I darkened round the edge of the image to appear as if a shadow had formed. I then added a lighter coloured box and text with page numbers.
Overall, I am very pleased with my result, cover especially as I like how the image is almost living and full of energy; almost coming out of the page which is the sort of technique used in the media industry to boost sales and intice readers. Use of colour is another way of doing this, I believe that by enhancing the purple of my jumper by reducing saturation around it, the cover appears more eyecatching and exciting.
When next using photoshop, I will think more about my contents page as I believe that against the cover, it looks simpler and duller in appearance. I am happy with my overall result.

Film AS Preliminary Task

Pre-production

For our prelim task we had to create a short film sequence showing a character walking, opening and closing a door and finally sitting down at a table having a brief conversation with another character. We had to include a range of shots including a close up, medium shot, long shot, and over the shoulder shots.
First of all, we needed to storyboard our initial idea and translate the story into a series of different camera angles i.e. shots, then label what type of shot it was and any direction the character would be doing.
After storyboarding, we were asked to swap with another group, we were expected to then film from our new storyboard seeing if we could understand what was meant to be done.

Post-production

During filming, I took part quite alot . I filmed the first long shot of Megan walking, the medium shot of Megan walking to the door and the close up of the door handle. The over the shoulder shots were also partly filmed by me during our second take of filming that part of the sequence.
We had to re-film some shots such as filming Megan's feet walking as we did not film within the 180 degree rule, because of this I have learnt to always keep this rule in mind when filming. When editing, I cut matched the transition of the first long shot to the close up of Megan's feet to keep continuity, I also partly edited the sequence of Megan opening the door ( medium shot to close up to over the shoulder shot). Problems we had during production were that the camera we had for part of filming faded in and out so when editing, we found it difficult to cut each fade out completely without cutting the story.
From this, I have learnt that if I use the same camera as before when filming next, I must wait for at least 5 seconds beforehand to make sure the fade is complete.

The 5 C's

5 C's

  • Camera Angles

  • Continuity

  • Cutting(aka editing)

  • Close-ups

  • Composition

When telling the audience where a film is set, use a long shot. This lets you show all the important information.

A medium shot is the most commonly used shot in cinema, it is used to show any character interaction.

A close-up is used when something or someone is highlighted to show the audience that they are inportant.

Continuity
Genrally refers to a visual error. In very basic terms, it means having a character in a red top one second and a blue top the next.

Cutting/Editing
This is essential otherwise films would be in real time and never end. The main use is to either add pace to a scene to make it exciting or to slow it down fdor dramatic emphasis.

hello there...

hello there, my name is Matthew and this is my first blog of many i guess. I am very interested in fashion and culture, particularly different European cultures, as half of my family are from Prague, Czech Republic.
I believe Art will one day take over the world and everyone will feel like they can express themselves however they please if it be through music, fashion, or even perhaps painting with their feet!
Music is a huge interest to me, I enjoy chilling to bands such as the Smiths, The Drums, The Kinks, Two Door Cinema Club, a mix mash of stuff really, at this moment I have this song stuck in my head ...
